Lessons in Patience: What Fatherhood Taught Me About Business

How raising kids sharpens the art of waiting in entrepreneurship.

Being an entrepreneur is a relentless pursuit. You juggle demands, oversee operations, and create strategies — it’s a frantic rhythm most days. Yet, some of my most valuable lessons in patience have come from my role as a father. Balancing these two worlds has revealed undeniable truths: success doesn’t always happen on a deadline, and sometimes, you have to watch things unfold naturally.

My life in Atlanta, as an entrepreneur and a father of two sons, has been filled with moments where patience was not just a virtue, but a necessity. Let me take you through some real-world instances where waiting became my greatest ally in both parenting and business.

The First Lesson: Waiting for Growth

When my son, Chandler, was born, I remember anxiously anticipating his milestones. I thought if I applied the right techniques—read the right books—he would roll over at exactly six months and start walking by one year. But that wasn’t the case. He rolled over when he was ready, not when I expected. Surprisingly, this absence of an exact timeline taught me to appreciate gradual progress.

Fast forward a few years. I was launching my first restaurant, and I found myself in a similar predicament. Despite laying out a comprehensive plan, it took longer than expected to gain traction. Tables didn’t fill up overnight. I had to exercise the same patience I learned as a dad. I reviewed what worked, adjusted our marketing strategies, and instead of pressing for immediate results, I took time to refine our menu based on customer feedback. Like watching my son learn to walk, I had to step back and trust the process. In the end, our patience paid off when we became one of Atlanta’s favorite spots.

The Second Lesson: Understanding Individual Timelines

My son, Chase, took his own sweet time learning to ride a bike. While I wished to see him zooming down the street like his friends, he needed to take baby steps. Each wobble, every fall, was a part of his learning curve. I had to learn to let go of my expectations and allow him to find his rhythm.

In business, I realized that my team members have their own unique timelines as well. Each person learns differently. When I opened my second restaurant, I hired a diverse staff with varying experience levels. Instead of forcing immediate efficiency, I encouraged mentorship and collaboration. The delay in performance wasn’t a setback; it was part of building a strong, cohesive team. Once they each found their stride, our productivity soared. Patience transformed a potential disaster into a thriving environment.

The Third Lesson: Cultivating Resilience

As a father, I witnessed my sons face setbacks. Whether it was failing to make a sports team or getting a poor grade, those moments were critical. I learned that resilience isn’t just about bouncing back — it’s about fostering an environment where they could try again without fear of failure.

In my businesses, I faced significant challenges. There have been nights when the restaurant ran out of key ingredients or when a social media campaign flopped. Initially, I panicked, thinking every setback would redefine my brand. But like I taught my sons, I learned to regroup and reassess. Resilience in business is about learning from mistakes and yes, waiting it out to see how you can fix things. Embracing setbacks has led to some of my best innovations, whether it’s shifting our menu to seasonal ingredients or evolving our customer service practices.

The Fourth Lesson: Building Strong Foundations

As parents, we’re tasked with building strong foundations for our children. It’s not about giving them everything outright; it’s about teaching them the value of effort and the satisfaction of earning things. I spent countless evenings helping my sons with school projects or supporting their sporting events. Each moment invested was about teaching them patience and perseverance.

In my restaurant operations, I’ve taken a similar approach. I focus on site selection, team training, and customer relationships. It took almost a year to find the perfect location for my second restaurant, but I trusted that taking the time was crucial. I envisioned not just a place to eat but to cultivate a community. Today, that location buzzes with energy and loyal patrons, thanks to laying those groundwork stones instead of rushing into a decision.

The Fifth Lesson: Fostering Patience in Others

One of the hardest yet most rewarding challenges in fatherhood is instilling patience in your kids. You want them to understand that things worth having often take time. During family movie nights, I often pause to discuss characters’ decisions or the slow build of a plot — lessons in pacing that translate into life.

As a business leader, I’ve started to implement these principles in my team. Creating an environment focused on long-term goals rather than short-term wins has shaped our culture. I initiated quarterly retreats, encouraging my team to think about where they see our brand in five years. This has nurtured a collective mindset where we celebrate small victories while keeping our eyes on the big picture. Over time, this patience has built a loyal customer base that appreciates our brand evolution.

Conclusion: Embrace the Wait

Looking back, patience has been a recurring theme in my life as a father and entrepreneur. The skills I’ve honed through parenting have seamlessly translated into the business world. Waiting for growth, understanding individual timelines, cultivating resilience, building strong foundations, and fostering patience in others have become my tenets for success.

Moving forward, I encourage fellow entrepreneurs to embrace the waiting game. Instead of rushing, consider the lessons hidden in the pauses. Whether in parenting or business, patience is a powerful tool that will lead to growth, maturity, and, ultimately, success.
